To Rebuild Self-Trust and Start Living On Your Own Terms!
Hello Gutty Girl,
Do you feel invisible in your own family? Do you eat when you’re anxious and can’t explain why? Do you keep choosing people who don’t choose you back?
That’s not a food problem or a willpower problem. That’s a nervous system that learned — usually in childhood, usually from a mother or father who couldn’t show up the way you needed — that your needs come second. Anxious-preoccupied attachment, codependency, and emotional eating are three faces of the same wound: you never learned you were worth choosing.
Read on to see if you struggle with anxious‑preoccupied attachment.
Anxious‑preoccupied attachment is an insecure attachment style where a person learns—usually in childhood—that love is inconsistent, unpredictable, or conditional. As an adult, this creates a pattern of over‑investing emotionally, fearing disconnection, and working overtime to keep relationships close.
Anxious‑preoccupied attachment is a relational pattern where a person becomes hyper‑focused on connection, hyper‑aware of emotional shifts, and hyper‑responsible for maintaining closeness because they fear abandonment due to a parent's absence.
It’s not “needy.”
It’s nervous‑system survival wiring due to emotionally immature parents, abandonment wound, mother wound, or childhood emotional neglect trauma.
Where It Comes From
It usually develops when a child experiences:
inconsistent caregiving
emotional unpredictability
love that comes and goes
a parent who is physically present but emotionally unavailable
a parent who is loving one moment and withdrawn the next
The child learns:
“I must work hard to keep people close.”
This becomes the adult pattern.
How It Shows Up in Adulthood
People with anxious‑preoccupied attachment often:
overthink relationships
fear being forgotten, replaced, or dismissed
over‑give to feel secure
monitor their partner’s moods
carry the emotional weight of the relationship
confuse provision with presence
stay loyal even when the relationship becomes one‑sided
abandon their own needs to keep the connection stable
This is the attachment style most connected to codependency, self‑abandonment, and emotional over‑functioning.
The Nervous‑System Pattern
The body stays in a state of:
hypervigilance
emotional scanning
fear of disconnection
fawning
over‑attunement
This is why anxious‑preoccupied attachment feels like:
“I’m responsible for keeping us close.”
If this sounds like your story.
Our weekly recovery letters on nervous system healing, emotional eating triggers, codependency recovery, the mother wound, and low-sugar living can help you detach from anxious-preoccupied attachment and self-abandonment patterns.
If you’re here, you already know something is off.
You know you’re codependent. You know you eat when you’re anxious. You know, you keep saying yes when everything in you is screaming no. And you want to stop abandoning yourself.
You’ve tried to change it. Therapy. Self-help books. Journaling streaks. Maybe a sugar-free challenge that lasted eleven days.
But it doesn’t stick. Because it was never about willpower.
It’s about what happened to you — the mother wound, the one-sided relationships, the childhood where your needs didn’t matter — and how your nervous system learned to survive all of it by abandoning yourself.
That’s where I come in.

I’m Dr. Nikki LeToya White — trauma-informed nutritionist, recovery coach, emotional wellness resource consultant, and the woman who spent years stress-eating in the bathroom before I figured out what was actually wrong.
10 years in full remission from binge eating and anxiety. 20+ years married with four kids, while actively dismantling codependency and one-sided relationships in real time.
I built the Life Audit and Kitchen Reset frameworks from what actually worked — not from what looked good in a course outline.
I teach what I’ve lived. Not theory. Practice.
Your subscription also directly supports The Light of Day Inc. — my outreach organization providing recovery aid and crisis support to women across the US and globally.
I didn’t create this name from confidence. I created it during a relapse.
After years of battling anxiety and a binge eating disorder, codependency, shrinking, and burnout as a therapist, I took a full year off to stabilize. No performing. No producing. Just recovering from 17 years of self-abandonment. You can read all about my 17-year professional journey, showing how codependency shows up in business, in my popular series: Notes From The Field.
Full remission. Clear boundaries. Low-sugar stability. No more spirals on the bathroom floor.
When the voice asked, “Who do you think you are?” — I answered: A Gutty Girl. Not perfect. Regulated. Done abandoning herself. Period!
That’s who these letters are for.
